Mayor Bloomberg announced that this snowstorm is the fifth largest in the
Great Kills, Staten Island
history of NYC! There is lots of snow to shovel in New York. Shoveling snow is very demanding on the body. The energy used to shovel is compared to the amount of energy needed to complete a round of tennis or speed walking at 5 m.p.h. Below are some Snow Shoveling Safety Tips for Staten Island, NY
1. If you have a history of heart trouble, talk to your doctor before you begin to shovel.
2. Avoid caffeine or nicotine before beginning. They may increase your heart rate and cause your blood vessels to constrict, placing extra stress on your heart.
3. Drink plenty of water. Dehydration doesn’t only happen in the summer.
4. Dress in layers so you can remove one at a time as needed.
5. Warm up first just as you would for any other excercise. Stretch the muscles in your arms and legs, warm muscles work more efficiently and are less likely to be injured.
6. Bend your knees and keep your back as straight as possible. Lifting should come from leg muscles. Never bend at your waist.
7. Keep some distance between your hands allowing for more leverage and making it easier to lift snow.
8. Shovel in sections. Shovel off 2 inches at a time.
9. Push, don’t lift. Save back energy by pushing snow to the side instead of lifting and throwing off to side.
10. Listen to your body. If you feel pain in chest, shoulder, neck or arm or experience dizzieness, fainting sweating, nausea or shortness of breath, seek medical help.

The $8,000 tax credit is for first-time home buyers only. For the tax credit program, the IRS defines a first-time home buyer as someone who has not owned a principal residence during the three-year period prior to the purchase.
The tax credit does not have to be repaid unless the home is sold or ceases to be used as the buyer’s principal residence within three years after the initial purchase.
The tax credit is equal to 10 percent of the home’s purchase price up to a maximum of $8,000.
The tax credit applies only to homes priced at $800,000 or less.
The tax credit now applies to sales occurring on or after January 1, 2009 and on or before April 30, 2010. However, in cases where a binding sales contract is signed by April 30, 2010, a home purchase completed by June 30, 2010 will qualify.
